Sport Program of Davao City

To veer the youth away from dangerous vices such as drugs, alcoholism, smoking and even gangsters, Congressman Karlo Nograles has continuously supported and organized Sports Activities for the youth, particularly those belonging to depressed communities. YES TO SPORTS, NO TO DRUGS. "Sports for the Youth Program".

Tying-up with various youth organizations, as well as the Sangguniang Kabataan, Congressman Karlo Nograles gladly sponsored trophies, cash prizes and equipment for various barangay tournaments in basketball, volleyball and chess, among others.

Other times, Congressman Karlo Nograles would organize his own tournaments in several barangays and communities. In 2006 and 2007, owing to the popularity of Manny Pacquiao as a boxing icon, Congressman Karlo Nograles organized the "OPLAN KAMAO NG KABATAAN: The Search for Junior Pacman" Inter-Barangay Boxing Tournament in Davao City, aimed to bring the sport of boxing down to the grassroots level. The tournament was an instant hit, going around more than fifty barangays in Davao City, wherein the fights would be aired live over AM radio and shown on cable TV.

Besides tournaments, Congressman Karlo Nograles has been successful in identifying areas for the construction of newly basketball courts and covered courts. Most community open spaces in the district now have their own basketball courts to cater to the youth's need for sports. This has been Nograles constant campaign to the youth - that they say "Yes to Sports, No to Drugs and Other Vices". Taking it a step further, Congressman Karlo Nograles has now gotten the youth interested in basic skills training on welding in order for them to create their own basketball goals and boards. Rather than just donating basketball goals, any youth organization requesting for a basketball court are instead made to undergo a skills training workshop on basic welding so that they themselves can fabricate their own basketball steel goals for the community. This way, not only athletic skills but, more importantly, intellectual and creative skills become honed as well. All participants in the basic welding course each receive a Certificate of Training from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
